Artist description:

A painter born at Hethersett near Norwich, Russell Reeve attended the Norwich School of Art in 1908 before training as an architect. He joined the Norfolk Yeomanry in the First World War and in 1917 became a Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers in France. His drawings were admired by William Rothenstein an Official War Artist who became Principal of the Royal College of Art in 1920. At his suggestion, Reeve obtained a place at the Slade School where he studied from 1919-22 and became a part-time student of etching at the Royal College of Art. From 1929, Russell Reeve became a visiting teacher of painting and drawing at the Hornsey College of Art and after the Second World War, his work was reproduced in the ‘Pictures for Schools’ series. He exhibited at the NEAC, RA, RBSA, RP and the RE; a retrospective exhibition was held at Christchurch Mansion, Ipswich in 1992. Examples of his work are held in the collections of the Tate Gallery, Slade School, V&A, GAC, BC, Sheffield and Bradford Art Galleries and Ulster Museum and Art Gallery.
