Artist description:
At the age of 14, Matysiak started an apprenticeship as a decorative painter with his father. During this time he visited an influential exhibition of works by Paul Klee. He was admitted to the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in 1935 and at the same time attended the State School of Applied Arts. He was conscripted in 1936 and spent 9 years in the military, 7 as an infantryman in the east and two in American captivity.
In 1946 he became self-employed as a painter and graphic artist and from 1948 he worked as a pattern designer for Pausa, he also worked as an illustrator, caricaturist and cartoonist for Südkurier and the Swiss satirical magazine Nebelspalter. In 1962 he joined the artists’ group “The Small Circle”, and from 1965 to 1975 he taught at the private Bodensee-art school in Konstanz where he died.
He was a highly productive artist who worked in a variety of techniques including oil painting, watercolour, tempera, ink, pen and brush, crayon, pencil, drypoint, woodcut and linocut and mixed forms.
