Ron Maddox was born in Purley, Surrey and studied at St. Albans School of Art from 1945 to 1948. He served with the Air Ministry Design Service, during which time he attended Regent Street Polytechnic in London from 1949-51, following which he completed his studies at London College of Printing where he was taught by Henry Trevick, Raymond Sheppard, and Christopher Sanders. Between 1953 and 1962 Maddox worked as an art director for advertising agencies in London and since 1962 he has worked as a freelance artist illustrator and graphic designer.
Maddox designed postage stamps for Royal Mail 1972-89 and the Isle of Man postal authority. He also produced posters for British Railway and painted pictures used as carriage panel prints in the 1950s. His paintings have been exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Pastel Society, Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours where he acted as President in 1989 and in 1999. He is an Honorary RWS, a Fellow of the Chartered Society of Designers a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a Fellow of the Society of Architectural Illustrators. He received numerous awards for his work as an artist and designer including the Design Council Award in 1973. Maddox illustrated several books some of which are mentioned below. Examples of his work are in the collections of the Fry Gallery, GAC and the Tate Gallery.
