Artist description:

A painter, illustrator and etcher born in New Malden, Surrey, she attended Richmond School of Art between 1932 and 1935 and the Central School of Arts and Crafts between 1937 and 1939. Phyllis Ginger was elected a member of the Senefelder Club in 1939 and her ambition was to become a full-time illustrator. During the war years she was retained by the Pilgrim Trust and her resulting work can be seen in the Recording Britain series and in the immediate post-war years, her work was reproduced in the ‘Pictures for Schools’ series. During the 195os, she designed and illustrated numerous book-jackets and books. Ginger exhibited at the Royal Watercolour Society, of which she became a member in 1958, the Royal Academy and the New English Art Club. Examples of her work are in the permanent collections of Washington State Library, the Victoria and Albert Museum and Museum of London.
