Description

Artist description:

Anthony Brown was a semi-abstract painter and sculptor who produced strong vibrant images often with a figurative theme. Educated at Rugby School and Oxford, he trained at the Slade School of Art in London in the late 1920s and was an exhibitor at the first British Surrealist show in 1936. He was appointed to the staff of Achimota College in 1929 and this began a long association with West Africa which strongly influenced his painting. In 1947 he returned to Winterborne Stickland in Dorset with his wife to paint, sculpt and teach.
