Artist description:

Born in Hamburg, Hans Pape studied at the Hamburg School of Applied Arts between 1913 and 1914 when he was called up for military service; he was severely wounded in 1918. From 1918-20, he studied at the Munich School of Applied Arts and between 1920 and 1922 at the Munich Akademie. He began to develop a reputation for woodcut illustrations for publishers in the 1920s and from 1925, he founded, and taught for 35 years the class for lettering, book design and commercial art at the Münster School of Applied Arts and Crafts. He is best known for his wood engravings and for designing typeface, books, posters, packaging and labels.
