Artist description:

A painter and sculptor born in London, John Melville was raised in Birmingham from 11 years old. He was largely self-taught and held his first solo exhibition at the Crescent Theatre, Birmingham in 1932 and another in the same year at the Wertheim Gallery, London. By 1938 he had joined the Surrealist Group and had work illustrated in the London Bulletin. In the 1950s, Melville worked for Punch magazine and held a solo exhibition in 1951 at the Hanover Gallery, London. He also showed at the St George’s Gallery, RBSA, RBA, NEAC, Ikon Gallery and Leeds Art Gallery. Examples of his work are in the collections of Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, Leeds Museums and Galleries, Leicester City Gallery and Salford Museum and Art Gallery. Blond Fine Art had a retrospective show in 1986, Gothick Dream Fine Art a memorial exhibition in 1987, with another show at The Millinery Works in 2006.
